Answers
to Frequently Asked Questions
What is Encyclopædia
Iranica?
It is the most extensive compendium ever conceived
on the past and present culture of the Iranian peoples and their contribution
to the broader history of human civilization.
Encyclopædia Iranica is a multi-volume, multi-disciplinary
work designed as a major source of information, providing a detailed and
accurate picture of an important world civilization over a span of several
thousand years.
In what language is the
Encyclopædia published?
In English, in order to make it accessible to
the widest possible readership in the world, no less than to educated Iranians.
A projected Persian translation is envisaged once the Encyclopædia
has been published in its entirety.
Who sponsors Encyclopædia
Iranica?
Encyclopædia Iranica is a project
of Columbia University and is prepared at its Center for Iranian Studies.
For over two decades it has been supported chiefly by the National Endowment
for the Humanities, an independent Federal agency, which has classified
it as a "major project". However, in order to realize the full budget,
we need to raise a third to half of our annual budget from other
sources. Several institutions and individuals have assisted through private
donations. The need however is ever-present, and we must appeal to all
those who value the completion of the Encyclopaedia to assist it
with their donations.
How objective is Encyclopædia
Iranica?
Encyclopaedia Iranica is a non-partisan,
non-political, non-religious, non-ideological and entirely independent compendium
of objective, documented and reliable information that has drawn on the expertise
of more than 910, thus far, of first-rate scholars world-wide from major
universities and academies of North America, Europe and
Asia.
Who would find the Encyclopædia
useful?
Students, scholars, and educated readers; in brief,
all those who are eager to learn more about Iranian peoples and their cultures
will find the Encyclopædia an indispensable source of information.
Iranians brought up abroad will find it particularly
useful for learning about their cultural heritage.
How many volumes have been
published?
Eleven volumes have been published and the 12th volume will be out in Spring of 2004.
Why is the Encyclopædia
so detailed?
The long history of Iranian peoples and their
important contributions to world culture make it incumbent upon the
Encyclopaedia Iranica to do justice to the full scope of available
information. As such, it is no ordinary project, and it will hardly be repeated.
