The Iranian American Forum (IAF) was formed by the Encyclopedia Iranica
to foster awareness of Iranian culture and heritage, celebrate the
professional accomplishments of Iranians worldwide, and provide a forum
for the exchange of ideas among Iranian-American professionals. The
IAF's inaugural undertaking is a series of lectures organized to raise
awareness and understanding of the encyclopedia; promote dialogue among
those interested in Iranian history, culture and heritage; and explore
Iranian historical and contemporary arts, poetry literature and film.

The Iranian American Forum was very pleased with the success of its
first event, a cocktail party and presentation by Shirin Neshat, which was held in late September at
the Plum Blossoms Gallery in Chelsea.
Neshat is an internationally renowned contemporary video artist and photographer whose striking works question presumptions about men's and women's roles in
Islam. Neshat's works have been included in exhibitions throughout the
world, and among her solo shows have been exhibitions at the Whitney
Museum of American Art at Philip Morris, New York; the Tate Gallery of
Modern Art at St. Mary-le-Bow Church, London; and the Art Institute of
Chicago. Ms. Neshat, who was introduced at the IAF event by Professors
Yarshater and Dabashi of Columbia University, showed slides of her
photographs and film stills, and screened a portion of one of her films,
Turbulent. Ms. Neshat accompanied her slide presentation with a
discussion of her motivation and methods, and ended by graciously
accepting questions from the audience. The lecture and screening were
followed by a lively cocktail reception, and the event was thoroughly
enjoyed by all who attended.
