Columbia
University SPONSORSHIP AND RECOGNITION

    Columbia University, New York
Encyclopædia Iranica is prepared at the Center for Iranian Studies of Columbia University. The idea for the Encyclopædia was conceived in 1973, and began at Columbia in 1974.

The National Endowment for the Humanities, the foremost sponsor of educational, academic, and research projects in the field of humanities, has recognized the need for, and significance of, Encyclopædia Iranica, which it has classified as a "major project," and has supported financially since 1979, an exception in terms of both the length of patronage and the amount of support bestowed on research-tool projects.

The American Council of Learned Societies has endorsed Encyclopædia Iranica. Professor Stanley N. Katz, its President, wrote to the Editor: It is an honor for the ACLS to have even this remote connection to such a distinguished academic undertaking, and I congratulate you on this success and wish you the best of luck in the continued excellence of the Encyclopædia.

In June 1997, following the sponsorship of The American Council of Learned Societies, the highly prestigious Union Académique Internationale voted unanimously to extend its sponsorship to Encyclopædia Iranica project during its 71st session which convened in Brussels.

In 1990, the Getty Grant Program, well-known for its sponsorship of art history and archaeology studies, also recognized the particular contribution of Encyclopædia Iranica in these fields by allocating a substantial grant for a 3-year period.

The Iran Heritage Foundation, an organization formed to the support academic and educational projects, has underscored the value of the work by giving the major portion of its grant disbursements to the Encyclopædia Iranica. Bibliotheca Persica, which devotes its resources to the publication of Persian literary and scientific works; the Persian Heritage Foundation, which supports research and publications in Iranian Studies; and the Mahvi Cultural Foundation, Semnani Philanthropic Foundation, Ghassemieh & Amirsaleh Family, Nazem Family Foundation, Kalbasi and Pourghadiri Family, and the Safas Corporation have among others aided the Encyclopædia Iranica in recognition of its scholarly value.

Among the individuals who have generously supported the encyclopaedia are Khosrow Eghbal, Esq., Dr. Richard Haas, Esq., Houshang Ansari, Sadigheh Rastegar, Dr. Mansur Zandieh, Fereshteh Bekhrad and many others.
